Would you exchange five handmade items for a bowl of soup and bread? ECHO, El Camino Homeless Organization, is seeking knitters and quilters to help with their Empty Bowls fundraising event. “Last year was wildly successful and everyone loved the bowls and the many knitted and quilted items,” said Robin Smith, fundraising volunteer.
In exchange for donating five or more handmade items, participants receive a complimentary ticket to ECHO’s Empty Bowls fundraising luncheon happening in April. “We need about 40 more women to knit or sew five items or more,” said Smith. “We’re expecting attendance to be around 600 people this year!” Last year women made soup bowl cozies, pot holders, trivets, dish towels, and mug rugs. “We also have lots of different items, too. There were beautiful knitted hats, felted iPhone cases, eye glass holders, all kinds of pretty things,” said Smith. “This year a local 4-H group made fleece scarves with pretty bead work. There’s lots of ways for young and old to get involved!”

As an added bonus, anyone who donates 5 or more items is also entered into a drawing to win one of four $100 gift certificates to local shops including Birch Fabrics (Paso Robles), The Quilter’s Cupboard (Atascadero), Ranch Dog Knitting (Atascadero), and Sew Fun (Atascadero).
Those who would like to donate five handmade items or more to ECHO’s Empty Bowls event are asked to register by email to Robin Smith at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 712-1224. Handmade items need to be completed by April 24 and can be exchanged for a ticket at the local shops listed above.
